Up on Robinson’s Railway
Located at the Varnamtown Landing is Robinson’s Railway. “Railroad” tracks extend into the water. On the track is a metal cage that is lowered from the tracks into the water. A boat is then pulled into the “cage.” Then, both the cage and boat are pulled up out of the water by cables run by a diesel engine. Once on land, the boat is braced with supports.
Boats come from many fishing communities. Here, general repair, yearly painting of the hull and other work can be done. My impression of the boats was a feeling of being dwarfed. On land, their size was so much larger than they appear on the water. I gained some perspective of the boats, how amazing and well-built they are and how much work it takes to keep them safely on the water.
